New FocusWriter release

I have released a new version of FocusWriter that has all of the new features I’ve been talking about recently: spell checking, document tabs, more statistics, and general interface improvements. Go forth and enjoy! Please let me know if you have any problems.

I spent time trying to find out the price.
I found the numerous technicalities rather forbidding. (In my earlier experience an electric typerwriter was leading edge technology!)
I don’t know what a .txt file is, but something tells me it is bad news.
There is a vast fortune awaiting someone like you who can cut through the ubiquitous techno-babble and make this sort of thing genuinely easy to use - I mean easy for someone like me, a computer illiterate. You may find this hard to believe but there are vast numbers of people who do not understand even the simplest things about how to use software.
(Think of the money you could make!)

hello,
i discovered this software recently and really enjoed the idea behind it. i’d like to use it for some serious project but sadly i discovered that it doesn’t support vocals with emphasis (àèìòù which my natural language is full of!)
Is this some kind of unicode issue? Am I the only one that have this problem? Is there any plan to fix it?

This is the first time I have heard of this issue. FocusWriter uses Unicode throughout, and it saves files using the UTF-8 character encoding. It shouldn’t have any problems with those characters.
I copied the symbols you mentioned and pasted them in a test document. They showed up for me, and they showed up when I relaunched the program. Are you unable to type them? Or do they not show up when you open a document?

I found out that the problem was in the other program (Keynote, an OS hierarchycal notepad) which exports its notes in ANSI format…
Anyway thanks for the quick response, i’m gonna use this lil’ cool software anyway…

Hi,
I’m unable to install a german dictionary and I’m not really sure what kind of file to download/add in the prefs dialog. Following the Links on this page and the hunspell site (link in in the about dialog) I found and tried these Open Office files
de_DE_frami.zip
dict-de_DE-frami_2009-07-01.oxt
igerman98-20091006.tar.bz2
But I always get a message “Unable to list files in archive” 😦
I also tried extracting the files from the the zip file (there’s a de_DE_frami.dic in it).
(using Mac OS 10.6 / FocusWriter 1.2.0)
Can someone help out?

I just tested them and all of those dictionaries work for me. However, I only have an old iBook G3 running Mac OS X 10.4 to port my programs with. Does Mac OS X 10.6 still provide the unzip terminal command?

Yes, there is a /usr/bin/unzip (UnZip 5.52)
But I just found the problem: There was a space character in the path name of the dict archive. I moved the file to a different location and then it worked (de_DE_frami.zip).

I’m glad to hear that! The next release of FocusWriter will use an embedded copy of minizip to extract files, and it will be able to handle spaces in the filenames.
