New Tanglet release

Posted on January 13, 2010, under Tanglet

I have just released Tanglet 1.0.1, which has a few small bug fixes and a French translation provided by Mehdi Yousfi-Monod, including a word list and dice set. If you have any questions or comments about this release, please let me know. Otherwise, enjoy!

In french, my best score is 109 (woohoo !). Anyway, may I request a quite nice feature I’d like to see ? At the end, show the best score possible (somewhere, perhaps on the bottom right next to the current score). In fact, because of this random aspect, hall of fame seems quite useless.

That’s said, it’s quite perfect

I’m actually thinking about showing the score as the amount of the maximum available score, so that the player has a better idea of how much of the board is left. Probably a simple change like showing “35 of 210 points” instead of “35 points”. How does this sound to you?

It is ewactly what I was thinking about. I must say I do like the suspens - not knowing at the end of the time if my score is great or not (i.e. a lot is missing) - during play.

I can understand that. It wouldn’t be too hard to have a setting that allows you to always show the maximum score, or only show it at the end of the game.

I seen a new release, congratulation.

But still hall of fame is quite useless, could you please order, for example, by % of possible score, and not by absolute score, it would be very nice ?

I’m afraid I don’t quite understand what you find useless about the high scores as they are. There’s an option now to only have boards that have higher maximum scores, so if you’re using that setting, you won’t get “stuck” with a board that only scores 38 (for example), and is therefore impossible to get on the scoreboard with. Would this not solve your problem?

The trouble I encountered with the percentage based scoring during player tests was that players found a consistent percentage of the maximum possible score per game. To me, high scores should be the best of the best that you’ve been able to do, and therefore kind of hard to get onto. The percentage based scoring made it act more like the top ten of your “normal” scores.

I have said that I would had liked to see, and I do not consider your solution as a bug, as I can read you thought about it.
Anyway, most of games use the choice you made (see mine sweeper).
